Bottom Financial Quintile Admission Target 2024

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) uses various surveys to classify households into income groups, specifically the B40, M40, and T20 categories. This classification is based on household income data from the Household Income and Basic Amenities Survey, conducted every few years. The survey considers factors like gross household income, living costs, and the number of household members. 

The income brackets for B40, M40, and T20 are determined by the total monthly income of households. These groups can be broken down as follows:

The Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMKe-12) prioritizes addressing poverty and fostering inclusivity under the principle of “leaving no one behind.” This strategy aims to ensure fair distribution of wealth and social justice, creating a prosperous and equitable Malaysia.

According to the 2022 Household Income Survey, the income thresholds for household groups are as follows:

The classification of these income groups is updated periodically, reflecting changes in economic conditions, inflation, and living standards.

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) believes that access to proper and quality education is vital in breaking the poverty cycle, which is key to transforming the lives of families and communities. Based on the data on student admission, in academic session 2023/2024 UTeM has admitted 1,103 undergraduate students (43% of student intake) who came from low-income families. Meanwhile, in academic session 2024/2025 UTeM has admitted 1,662 undergraduate students (42% of student intake) who came from low-income families.

Based on the demographic of undergraduate UTeM’s students of 10,888, 61.06% of the students (or 6,648 students) come from the Bottom 40% Household income group, which is the household income range is below RM4,850.00.
