UTeM's DeepAI Application: Empowering Individuals with Autism through NGO Collaboration to Achieve SDG Goals

Melaka, May 13 – Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has introduced the DeepAI application, an innovative digital platform designed to empower individuals with autism by enabling them to create and monetize artwork. This initiative exemplifies the significant impact of strategic partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to economic empowerment, inclusivity, and quality education.

In Malaysia, the number of children diagnosed with autism has seen a substantial increase, rising from 6,991 in 2013 to 53,323 in 2023, as reported by the Department of Social Welfare (JKM). This surge underscores the pressing need for inclusive programs that provide meaningful opportunities for individuals with autism. Recognizing this, UTeM’s DeepAI application leverages artificial intelligence to simplify the artistic process, enabling users to produce artwork more efficiently. This technology allows individuals with autism to explore creative designs and build digital art portfolios, facilitating new avenues for income generation and skill development.

The DeepAI project has been made possible through key collaborations with organizations like Persatuan Kanner Melaka, which has been instrumental in integrating autism-friendly practices into the application, ensuring it meets the unique needs of its users. Special education stakeholders in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan have also contributed significantly by developing targeted training and workshops that enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of the DeepAI application.

Financial and institutional backing from Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) has been crucial for this initiative. This support has enabled the creation of resources that directly benefit the autism community, ensuring continuous training and further enhancing the application’s functionality to align with user needs.

Prof. Dr. Massila Kamalrudin, Vice-Chancellor of UTeM, emphasized the university’s dedication to social responsibility, stating, “DeepAI not only aids in the development of artistic skills but is a testament to our commitment to societal impact through digital inclusivity.” With impactful partnerships and focused support for individuals with autism, the DeepAI project represents a significant advancement in UTeM's mission to foster economic inclusion and empower underserved communities. This initiative showcases how universities and NGOs can collaboratively make meaningful strides toward an inclusive and sustainable future, aligning with the broader objectives of the SDGs.
