Community Engagement in Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Awareness “Fundamental Understanding of Energy Management for Sustainability.”


Program Overview
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), through the Centre for Smart Environment (CENSEi), Pusat Alam Sekitar Pintar, actively supports community and industrial outreach initiatives to promote energy efficiency, sustainability, and clean energy awareness. In April 2024, CENSEI organized a specialized industry-based training program titled: “Fundamental Understanding of Energy Management for Sustainability.”

This program was conducted in partnership with CSC Steel Sdn. Bhd., one of Malaysia’s leading steel manufacturing companies. It aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of energy efficiency practices and sustainable energy management within industrial operations

Program Details
Date: 18–24 April 2024

Venue: CSC Steel Sdn. Bhd., Melaka

Participants: More than 40 employees from various operational departments at CSC Steel Sdn. Bhd.

Program Type: Paid industrial awareness program

The sessions were jointly facilitated by:
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Musthafah bin Mohd Tahir, Director, CENSEi
- Dr. Mohamad Firdaus bin Sukri, Head, Smart Energy Division, CENSEi
- Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Aida Fazliana binti Abdul Kadir, Energy Specialist, CENSEi

Objectives and Impact
The course was designed to:

  1. Enhance industrial awareness on the importance of energy efficiency and conservation.
  2. Develop technical understanding of sustainable energy management practices.
  3. Encourage behavioral change among participants to adopt energy-saving measures at both operational and organizational levels.
  4. Strengthen industry–university collaboration in advancing Malaysia’s energy sustainability goals.

Through lectures, discussions, and interactive sessions, participants learned about energy monitoring, management systems, and the broader implications of energy efficiency for business competitiveness and environmental responsibility.

Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7)
This initiative directly supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, which seeks to:

  • Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
  • Increase the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
  • Strengthen international cooperation to expand access to clean energy research and technology.

By delivering this program, UTeM demonstrates its commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable industrial practices, empowering the local workforce with energy management knowledge, and contributing to Malaysia’s energy transition agenda.

Conclusion
UTeM’s continued engagement with industries such as CSC Steel reflects its role as a regional leader in sustainability education and applied energy research. Through its programs under CENSEI, the university serves as a key enabler in fostering sustainable energy practices, industrial resilience, and environmental stewardship—in line with Malaysia’s national sustainability goals and the global SDG framework.


UTeM has joined the AEA award as the program to transfer the knowledge in regional level. UTeM has been announced as the winner for the energy management category during the event. Since there, UTeM able to consult and sharing the knowledge to the energy management committee at regional/international level.

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has joined the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) Certification since 2016 to date. The benefits of joining EMGS is given in the link above. In 2022, UTeM has achieve the highest 3-Stars EMGS Certification and the certification is valid until 2024.
