Pengurusan Tenaga Efisien (SDG 7)

UTeM’s Institutional Commitment Toward Renewable and Sustainable Energy Public Declaration of Commitment to Energy Management and Sustainability

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has established a strong institutional commitment to energy sustainability through the Energy Management Guidelines and Policy (Dasar dan Garis Panduan Pengurusan Tenaga). This formal policy includes a Declaration of Commitment (Deklarasi Komitmen) signed by the university’s leadership, represented by Professor Ts. Dr. Massila binti Kamaruldin, UTeM Vice-Chancellor, on 6 April 2022.

This declaration serves as a public pledge reflecting UTeM’s institutional responsibility to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy awareness, and sustainable resource utilization beyond the university campus.

Through this declaration, UTeM commits to:

  1. Continuously improving the efficiency and conservation of energy, water, and vehicle fuel across all university operations, including teaching, learning, and research.
  2. Addressing and acting upon various processes and activities that influence energy consumption, water usage, and transportation efficiency.
  3. Ensuring compliance with all national regulations related to energy management and conservation, including the Efficient Management of Electrical Energy Regulations 2008 and the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
  4. Aligning with the Government Green Procurement (GGP) Guidelines, promoting environmentally responsible purchasing and operational practices.
  5. Providing sufficient resources to implement a robust Energy Management System (EnMS) for sustained improvement.

These principles highlight UTeM’s broader role as a national example of sustainable campus operations and its outreach in promoting clean energy and environmental stewardship.

Promotion Beyond the University

UTeM’s sustainability agenda extends beyond its institutional boundaries. Through outreach programs, academic partnerships, and industrial collaborations, the university actively advocates for renewable energy adoption and awareness in the local and industrial community. Examples include:

  • Industry-focused energy awareness courses (e.g., CSC Steel Energy Management Program 2024) led by the Centre for Smart Environment (CENSEi).
  • Public engagements, seminars, and energy forums emphasizing renewable energy transition and sustainable energy efficiency practices.
  • Support for national and international initiatives aligned with Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER) and Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) goals.

This institutional pledge strongly aligns with SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, which aims to:

  • Ensure access to sustainable, reliable, and modern energy for all.
  • Promote energy efficiency as a cornerstone for sustainable development.
  • Encourage innovation and partnerships in clean energy systems.

By integrating policy, implementation, and community outreach, UTeM demonstrates leadership in supporting energy transition efforts, fostering renewable energy awareness, and contributing to Malaysia’s national sustainability commitments under SDG 7.

Conclusion

UTeM’s Declaration of Commitment represents not only an internal policy but also a public institutional pledge toward energy sustainability and renewable energy advocacy. Through this structured framework, the university continues to serve as a catalyst for energy-conscious education, research, and community transformation—embodying the principles of SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy at both national and global levels.
